About The Art of Developmental Coaching

For the last decade we’ve been fascinated by developmental psychology. We read books, listened to lectures and talked about it over coffee. But we never thought it would be possible to apply it to coaching. It remained firmly in the domain of theory.

And then we heard of people who were applying it to coaching. Joel read Jennifer Garvey Berger’s book on the topic and suddenly we realized it would be possible.

Then we sat on the idea for a long time.

We’d be sitting in Coaches Rising meetings and one of us would say “You know… we’ve got to put out a program on developmental coaching… there’s nothing out there online yet.”

Finally, last year, we created it. Jennifer kindly agreed to join the faculty along with the other specialists we knew who were applying developmental work to coaching. We spent months designing the program.

Honestly, we thought it would be a small group who registered. We thought it was a niche topic that we loved but wouldn’t be popular. Boy were we shocked when 250 coaches signed up, and it became our biggest program ever.

That was last year. This year we’ve worked just as hard to improve the training even further. Here are the main things we’ve done…

  • The program is longer (12 weeks rather than 8)
  • Pioneers of the field Robert Kegan and Susanne Cook-Greuter have joined the faculty
  • We’ve introduced brand new teaching content, and further integrated the learning arc

If last year is anything to go by, it’s going to be a powerful and eye-opening journey. We really hope you’ll join us.

The Art of Developmental Coaching is hosted by Coaches Rising.

Coaches Rising was founded in 2008 by Joel Monk & Laurens van Aarle and is at the forefront of a movement that is committed to radically further the impact coaches have in the world and the success they experience.

We believe that the work we do as coaches, and the way of being it represents, is essential to the kind of shift the world needs and deeply desires.

Coaches Rising is run by 3 people whom you can learn a bit more about below…

Laurens van Aarle - Co-founder

I’m a coach, entrepreneur and psychologist.

Curiosity and consciousness are at the heart of my work and life.
To me they form the bloodline of Coaches Rising, and all our programs are fueled by them.

I believe there is no professional relationship more potent than that between a skilled coach and someone ready to embody his or her full potential.

For Coaches Rising and The Art of Developmental Coaching, I get to simultaneously hold the bigger vision and make sure all the details are in place. Yes… It sometimes makes my head spin 😉

Next to crafting the course architecture, I create the workbooks for all our courses.

Both Joel and Ewan, next to being my business partners, have been fellow travelers on this evolutionary journey of becoming ever more deeply human.

Joel Monk - Co-founder

I’m a coach, trainer and entrepreneur.

Recently I saw on a deeper level how all the things in my life orient around cultivating a sense of ‘aliveness’. By this I mean – what is it to be awake and fully expressed in this moment? How can I metabolize the conditioning that binds me so that I can wake up into deeper expressions of authentic, embodied human presence?

I’m deeply committed to awakening the leader that lives in all of us. We’re all being invited to align with what wants to live through us and from here we can truly serve the world with our work.

I’m grateful that I get to work with Laurens and Ewan. Both of them have enriched my life in ways that I could never imagined when we both met. Here’s to where we head next!

For Coaches Rising and The Art of Developmental Coaching you’ll often find me hosting the dialogues and teaching sessions.

I’ve also been told that the way I express excitement or not in our meetings is a great barometer of how good an idea is and regularly informs our business strategy. note: handicap when it comes to playing poker.

Ewan Townhead - Marketing Director

I’m a writer, coach and founder of The Realized Entrepreneur where I explore the intersection of business, spirituality and art.

There are very few businesses I’ll actually partner with these days. Coaches Rising is one. Not only are Joel and Laurens dear friends, but their stand for deep conscious integrity in coaching and business is one I share resolutely.

I’m all about the new business paradigm. The one where we create our Work as work. I know of no business strategy more powerful than that of radical self discovery. I know of no spiritual path more complete than that of creating a business from your deepest heart.

My work for CR spans marketing strategy, launch architecture, idealism advocating and coffee drinking. If you don’t like any of the marketing, it’s probably my fault. Address all complaints to idontactuallyreadcomplaints@coachesrising.com
